The percentage of patients admitted to hospital via A&E within four hours of decision to admit

Rationale

The NHS Plan target of no patient spending over four hours in total in any A&E from December 2004 requires the elimination of all four hour waits post decision to admit by this date.

Construction

Numerator:
The number of patients waiting four hours or less from decision to admit to being placed in a bed. This includes patients admitted via all types of A&E department.

Denominator:
The number of patients admitted to hospital as an emergency via A&E. This includes patients admitted via all types of A&E department.

Indicator:
The number of patients waiting four hours or less from decision to admit to being placed in a bed divided by the number of patients admitted to hospital as an emergency via A&E. This includes patients admitted via all types of A&E department.

Expressed as a percentage.
